THE Church of Melanesia (COM) plans to conduct a ground-breaking ceremony for its proposed university, June this year.

The church’s coordinator of the university, Fr Philemon Akao revealed this on Thursday during the launching of the Solomon Island National University (SINU) Franchised Diploma in Primary Teaching (in –service) Program at the Saint Nicholas.

Fr Akao said the taskforce the church had put in place to work on the establishment of the John Coleridge Patteson University is now working toward the ground breaking ceremony.

“We’ve agreed that this will be held in June,” Fr Akao said.

The church plans to build the university on land it acquired in the Black Post area on the Guadalcanal plains.

Fr Akao said construction work will start after the June ceremony and they hope to open in 2014.
