GOVERNMENT should consider providing scholarships to students attending church tertiary institutions to allow them trained under Christian principles that will build them good character and moral values.

That’s according to Fulton College principal Joseph Pita as more local students are taking up studies at the college, in Fiji, this year.

Mr Pita said more than 90 local students are being accepted to study at Fulton this year.

"This is an increase from 78 last year," he said.

Mr Pita said the increase in local students shows that parents are concern about the future of their children because of lack of space in the country's formal education sector.

"The second thing is that parents have recognised the value for Christian education which will help to build the character of their children and moral values," he said.

Mr Pita said sending local students to Christian institutions is very important in order to gain moral values and character as future leaders of Solomon Islands.

"Government should not only concentrate on providing scholarships to circular institutions such as SICHE, University of the South Pacific, UPNG, UNITECH and other institutions but Church run institutions as well," he said.

He cited institutions like Divine Word and Pacific Adventist University (PAU).

"These are Christian institutions which help to build the students in their academic training as well as spiritual insight," he said.

Mr Pita said some of the country's old leaders are trained in Church institutions which helped to lead this nation.

"I see no reason why such support shouldn’t be given to Christian tertiary institutions," he said.
