FOUR bible translators from the Solomon Islands Bible Translation & Literacy Partnership (SIBTLP) recently held a three day translation awareness workshop for the Touo language at Vancouver village on Rendova Island, Western Province.
The translators came from various translation projects around the country.
Joshua Lui comes from the Simbo project, Jonathan Soiseu from Sa'a, Shadrach Rua from Arosi and John Waiwori from Owa.
Joshua Lui, the group leader, said ‘ the workshop focussed on three main areas, why you should bother with Bible translation, important issues in translation, and some technical things that translators and a review committee need to know to make the translation successful.
“This was the largest workshop we have ever held, and it was particularly exciting to see involvement from many women, chiefs, elders, laymen, ministers and pastors from the SDA, CFC and SSEC churches from the Loguru area.”
Jonathan Soiseu said church leaders commented that it is a miracle for them to be united to work together for the first time since Christian churches were established in the area.
“Everyone worked together to make sure that the workshop was a success,” he said.
After the workshop, the participants formed a translation committee of 24 people to oversee the ongoing work.
The committee also appointed seven translators and two review committees, plus literacy and scripture workers and typists.
The committee also set a budget of one hundred and fifty thousand dollars to finance its first year of activities.
The Touo Bible translation project will be assisted on an ongoing basis by Advisor Juston Lantrip from the Solomon Island Translation Advisory Group (SITAG).
Juston will be living in the Loguru region.
