Show commitment in eliminating violence, men urged

MEN in Solomon Islands are urged to show commitment to eliminate violence against women.


The call was made by SIDT Director Jennifer Wate words  on Wednesday evening at the Solomon Islands Development Trust (SIDT) during an activity organised by SIDT and Vois Blo Mere as apart of the 16 days of activism to end violence against women.

The activity was called speak up to end violence against women.

Mrs Wate said everyone should come together in solidarity not to encourage violence in our society.

Mrs Wate also applauded some provinces in Solomon Islands who are also taking part in the 16 days of activism campaign to eliminate violence against women.

Director of Women Development Division of the Ministry of Women, Youth, Children and Family Affairs Janet Tuhanuku said violence against women is a very serious and huge problem here in our country which calls for immediate action.

“Until we practice and experience peace in our homes, only then can we experience lasting peace in the world,” she said.

She also thanked everyone who make a commitment to stop violence against women.

Leonard Marzyano of SIDT urged men to respect women because they are part of men.

Josephine Teakeni director of Vois Blo Mere hope that today men will realise that women are created to be equal partners with men.

“I call on the men to be our partners and let us play the roles to eliminate violence against women,” she said.

Ms Teakeni urged everyone to make sure that peace prevails in homes because peace is everyone’s business.

The activity was attended by women and men representatives from various organisations including Ministry of Women, Youth, Children and Family Affairs, UN women.

The night ended with a drama about violence against women and children performed by the Sei drama group from SIDT.
