It is common in our society that child care and child raising is often seen a woman’s role, a mother’s role.

This was according to Janet Tuhaika director of Women Development Division during the "Speak up to eliminate violence against women" program on Wednesday at the Solomon Islands Development Trust area.

“I want to remind all of us today that the responsibility on raising our families is an equal responsibility for both the father and mother,” she said.

Mrs Tuhaika said the recent Solomon Islands Family Health and Safety study also showed that one  out of three  women reported that their mother had experienced domestic violence.

“One out of five said their partners’ family experienced domestic violence.

“Literature also shows that children learn from the things they see and hear from the environment around them,” she said.

“So the things children at home will build the foundation for them which will shape their values and principles in their later lives.”

Mrs Tuhaika also urged that homes should be a place where we treasure and encourage relationships that flourish peace, love, respect and understanding.
