THEY sprung up from nowhere, but they are now the driving force of empowering women with skills in Honiara.
The Honiara Women’s Initiative group (HWI), germinated from a belief, “we can do it” is powering women in its ongoing trainings.HWI after consuming an idea of finding a way out for women in Honiara from nothing to help themselves started the group without a single cent.
HWI now has 18 sewing machines and yesterday, 26 women from the Seventh Day Adventist Church benefitted largely from a three-week sewing course.
Members of the HWI Jan Sanga said HWI do not believe in talking and complaining.
“Women are very good at talking and complaining, but that we not do any good for us. We started off from nowhere on the founding idea of helping women thus things are in fruition,” Mrs Sanga said.
She said after the group formed, donations poured in which resulted in 18 sewing machines given to them.
“The sewing machines have already helped a group of women from the outskirts of Honiara who were trained on sewing skills early this year.”
She said the SDA woman is the second group of women to benefit.
Mrs Sanga said women group from the South Seas Evangelical Church will be the next group.
HWI also has a trainer Hellen Bowen who is also a member of the group and Convener Madam Sikua.
Representative of the SDA women who completed the course Patricia Sipolo said the course elevate them to the next level of self sustain.
“The training truly empowers us and helped us to be useful in our societies and families,” she said.
She said the skills gained from the training are of paramount importance to women.
She expressed appreciation to HWI for providing their own resources for training and for taking the bold step to empower women in Honiara
