27 August 2014

A training currently underway as part of UN Women’s ‘Strongim Mere Project’ aims to enhance gender justice.

Known as a Transformative Leadership, Media, Gender and Election training, various women from a number of organisations including the media are attending the training.

The weeklong training started on Monday this week.

It is organised in partnership with Vois Blong Mere Solomon and UN Women, aided by the European Union.

UN Women’s programme coordinator for Advancing Gender Justice in the Pacific (AGJP) Programme, Audrey Manu during the opening on Monday briefed the participants on the ‘Strongim Mere Project’.

She said the project is part of the Advancing Gender Justice in the pacific programme.

“It works to identify and breakdown country-specific barriers to women’s political participation and access to justice and human rights.”

She said to do this; there is training, support and resources to candidates, governments and civil society organisations to affect change at every level including the media.

She added that the media can play an important role in enabling full public participation especially in relation to the election cycle.

Mrs Many said ‘Strongim Mere project’ under the Advancing Gender Justice in the pacific programme is looking forward to working with all as partners “so that we can actively contributed to achieving women’s increase representation in Solomon islands in decision making levels, politics and strengthen women capacity to become more active citizens and leaders”.
