YWPG to present survey report

18 February 2015

Young Women Parliamentary Group (YWPG) executive will present a survey report to the Minister of Women, Youth, Children and Family Affairs Jimson Fiau Tanangada today.

Adviser to YWPG Marisa Pepa told this paper yesterday the executive comprises of Grace Hilly, Lisa Wini, Kristina Sogavare, Lily Chekana and herself.

“We hope that the Ministry in its capacity will look into the recommendations and consider them for the years ahead,” she said.

She said, in Solomons there are diverse community and when it comes to women’s issues it’s never a one size fits all case.

“It’ll be great if a survey like this is done nationwide...as the one we did hem only on one constituency,” Marisa said.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Home Affairs Douglas Ete launched this report in Parliament early this year in January.

The report contains information on voter behaviour towards women candidates before and after the 2014 Solomon Islands National General Election.

Young women and men were engaged by the Young Women Parliamentary Group (YWPG) at all stages in design, execution, analysis, and reporting.

The survey provided opportunities for an improvement in YWPG capacity to develop and use policy research in their overall mission.

Karlyn Roughan compiled the report with the YWPG members and individuals, UNDP office in Honiara, and senior officers of the National Parliament.

The surveyors were trained by researchers from the Islands Knowledge Institution (IKI), Kellington Simeon and Paul Roughan.
