Japan approves seaport project

The government of Japan has given its approval for the multi-million Honiara sea port project that will commence soon.

The Cabinet of Japan has approved the country’s international sea port project last month following the project’s design phase which was signed between the two countries on 17th January this year.

Following the signing, the proposal was brought forward to the Japanese government to deliberate on the proposal which the Japanese cabinet finally gives its approval last month.

In a grant signing agreement between the government representatives of the two countries yesterday, they have committed to work together for the construction stage of the project.

Japanese International Corporation Agency (JICA) representative in Honiara assured the government of Solomon Islands of its commitment for the implementation of the project.

Mr Taiji Usui said the signing of the grant agreement indicates the start of this major project the government and people of Japan has offered to assist the government and people of Solomon Islands with.

“The project was formulated to solve various problems at the present Honiara International wharf such as vessel conjunction, the efficiency and safety of cargo handling operation,” Mr Usui said.

Minister of Foreign Affair and External Trade Clay Forau has acknowledged the grant signing agreement on behalf of the NCRA government and people of Solomon Islands.

“On behalf of the government and people of Solomon Islands, I am honoured to sign the exchange of notes and grant agreement for the project ‘Improvement of Honiara Port Facilities,” minister Forau said.

Adding, he is honoured to be signing the exchange of notes and grant agreement for the construction phase of the project.
