The two trucks were paid for by the REP, using grant funds made available by the World Bank, which cost around SBD $718,000.
Manufactured by Hyundai of South Korea, the trucks are; 1 unit HD72 Garbage Press Pack (Garbage Compactor), which has a garbage container size of 6 cubic meters or 3.1 tons and 1 unit HD72 Vacuum septic tank lorry (Sludge removal) with a tank volume of 3.4KL.
Speaking at the brief occasion the Project Manager of REP, Salvador Jiao said, the handing over of the two brand new trucks is the ongoing support of REP towards the HCC in promoting a clean Honiara.
“REP fully supports the efforts of the HCC under the leadership of (caretaker) Mayor Andrew Mua and City Clerk Charles Kelly in promoting a "clean and green" Honiara.
“The latest provision of equipment is in addition to the ongoing street-cleaning and construction of small access infrastructure, such as Jacob's ladders in vulnerable communities around the city that REP implements since the project started in 2010”, Jiao said.
Speaking on behalf of the Mayor and the Council, the City Clerk Charles Kelly thanked the REP for the assistance.
“I would like to convey our word of appreciation on behalf of the Mayor and the Council to the REP for the two brand new trucks. It has been part of the council’s plan to improve its rubbish collection in the city and these two trucks would really help the council achieve that”, Kelly says.
He further stated that these would really help the Honiara residents with rubbish disposal.
Meanwhile, Mr Kelly also acknowledged the caretaker Mayor, Andrew Mua for his valuable support and commitment in ensuring the request for the assistance was achieved.
On the same note Kelly thanked the Hyundai Company for delivering the Brand new trucks from South Korea on time.
The City Clerk added that the purchase of these trucks shows the support the donors have towards the HCC.
Kelly made an appeal to other donors to come forward and support the HCC to help build a better and safer Honiara.
