Telekom reduces overseas call rates

27 February 2015

OUR Telekom has announced the completion of the migration of all International voice services to their Huawei fixed Next Generation Network (NGN) platform.

“From the cutover at midnight Tuesday 24th February 2015, all Our Telekom international voice circuits for mobile and fixed networks are now carried on voice over IP (VoIP) using Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) trunking to all our international transit partners, Telstra, Spark (formerly Telecom NZ), Singtel Optus and Speedcast,” the company said in a statement.

Chief Operating Officer, Keir Preedy, commented:

“This is an important step forward for International voice connectivity for the Solomon Islands, using a very high voice quality future proof technology that will allow easy transition to the future international submarine cable.”

He added customers can use either 00 or 01 as the international prefix to reach the service as they do today.

In anticipation of this move, Our Telekom has already lowered the price for international calls to the lower rates of the former 01 service.

The old Alcatel International Gateway will now be phased out of service, shut down after more than 20 years, and dismantled to make valuable room in Our Telekom Exchange for many new services including the core equipment for the new International submarine cable owned by Solomons Oceanic Cable Company (SOCC).

“Our engineers have expended considerable energy to have the Huawei NGN International Gateway operational.

“Solomon Telekom continues with its investment to bring up to world standards the equipment we deploy in our network.

“It is another milestone achievement for our very locally owned Our Telekom” says Chief Technical Officer Michael Palmer.
