Korovou fishery centre to be upgraded

25 June 2014

THE rundown Korovou fishery centre in Shorthand Island, Western Province will be upgraded soon.

That’s according to acting premier of Western province Wayne Maepio.

“The province had secured funds from the ministry of fisheries and provincial government,” Mr Maepio said.

“As soon as the contractor is secured work on the centre should start anytime.”

Mr Maepio said the current provincial government is concerned about the people in Shortland island and therefore the province will be reactivating the centre to help rural fishermen there generate income.

“The centre has been closed down in the past years which affected the rural people and their income in that part of the province.

“Therefore the provincial government and our mother ministry will reopen the centre by  building a permanent building and put on ground new fisheries facilities to ensure fishermen could able to sell their fish catch at the centre to earn an income,” he said.

Meanwhile, Mr Maepio thanked the provincial government and ministry of fisheries for helping the province reactivate the centre.

“Our government wishes to thank the mother ministries that enable us to revive this centre.

“Therefore since funding is now available work on reactivating the centre will start soon,” the acting premier said.
