People who have registered more than once are likely to face heavy penalty depending on the investigation by the Solomon Islands Electoral Commission (SIEC).

In the recent voters’ registration, more than 6,000 voters were found to have registered more than once.

Speaking to local media in a press conference yesterday, SIEC chief electoral commissioner Polycarp Haununu said, “Those who registered more than once are likely to face justice, as they have breached the Electoral Commission Act.”

The SIEC registration revision officer will give the decision on what measures to be taken against them.

“Whatever decision he comes up with will even end up in the high court for breaching the Electrol Commission Act.

“SIEC might as well advise the police to investigate into the matter and the case against them (voters).”

The voters registration provisional list that is currently released this week, bares names of eligible voters. Those whose names were highlighted yellow were the ones registered more than once.

Mr Haununu stated that those who registered more than once, only the name that they have first registered with will appear on the final list, but the decision whether to vote or not depends entirely on the registration revision officer.

“If you register more than once, your first registration will appear on the final listing, but the decision to vote or not, again depend on the registration revision officer.

“We also like to highlight yellow those whose names appeared more than once for the public to know and see are the ones that registered more than once.”

SIEC has this week released the provisional list of the registered voters for the public.
