09 August 2014

A third accused is now in custody following the alleged robbery of the Automatic Teller Machine (ATM) at the Kwaimani Building in East Honiara last month.

Dilo Faiga joins security officer Joe Silas and the driver of the car used in the alleged robbery, Saverio Sulimae in custody.

He surrendered himself to police and was said to have admitted in his record of interview he was directly involved in the robbery.

The police prosecutor during the remand application stated that Faiga received $45,000 where he used that money to buy a car.
The car is now with police.

The trio will appear again in the Honiara Magistrate Court on August 11.

They are all facing one count each of armed robbery in relation to the allegation on 11pm on July 25, this year at the Kwaimani building.

Police alleged they uprooted the ATM machine at the Kwaimani building using crow bars and then lifted it into the waiting car and drove off to Henderson, where they allegedly broke open the machine.

One of the men was also alleged to have been armed with a rifle.

It was alleged that more than $400,000 was in that machine but they allegedly took only more than $200,000 from the top tray as they can’t open the bottom tray.

According to the prosecution case, the men arrived in the car with a fake plate number at the Kwaimani building and after talking with the security officer, uprooted the machine.

The men then allegedly lifted the machine that weigh about more than 200 kilograms and drove off with the security officer.

The security officer allegedly received $30,000 and that money was not yet recovered.

Meanwhile police have already retrieved more than $500,000 from Sulimae’s wife that was believed to be proceeds of the ATM robbery.

Police have arrested Sulimae at the Honiara main wharf trying to board a ship to Auki.

His wife successfully boarded the ship but was later arrested at Auki.
