Farmers undergo livestock, poultry training

FIFTEEN young farmers in Malaita province together with the provincial agriculture officers in Malaita province have undergo two days small livestock training on husbandry and managing local chicken (Kokorako) in Auki on Wednesday.

The training was facilitated by World Vision Solomon Islands under the support of Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) to promote and encourage food security in the local communities.

This come after reports have it that climate change has affected most of pacific country’s food environment including Solomon Islands.

 Malaita is among the provinces that are affected by climate changes disaster where most village people have experienced shortage of food nowadays in their gardens.

Therefore World Vision is committed to facilitate the training for village young farmers to learn significance of local poultry management in the community.

Community representatives that attended the training includes, Suluole in Aoke Langalanga constituency, Kwao in West Kwara’ae constituency and Arao in North Malaita.

After the training participants are expected to go back, teach and encourage others in their communities on how to raise or manage the local chicken (kokorako).

Speaking to Solomon Star training facilitator and food security recovery project coordinator Robert Firidede said, the training aims to encourage community people to utilise the local breed chicken by building proper houses to manage and raise protein back at their own village.

“The training will also help these young people learn and understand the importance of keeping and managing existing local chicken in the village,” Mr Firidede said.
