Garu: police make progress

MINISTER for Police, National Security and Correctional Services, Moses Garu says the Royal Solomon Island Police Force (RSIPF) is progressing on the right trend in this post RAMSI era.

Speaking on the floor of parliament during the Motion of Sine Die on Monday, Mr Garu urged the country to trust the work of the police.

“Although the Regional Assistance Mission to Solomon Islands (RAMSI) has left our shores, our local police are fully equipped with the necessary skills and ability to carry out security work in the country.”

Mr Garu urged all citizens to cooperate and work together with police to ensure safety and peace and unity in the communities.

He revealed that RSIPF have developed a national security framework through the new office established as the security division, to take part in activities this year to enhance the security policy.

The minister said they prioritise the work on the national development security policy, to work alongside other law enforcement agencies.

He went on to reveal that a consultation workshop has been held recently with leaders of Choiseul and Western provinces, to see how policing work can be effectively implement at borderline, with Bougainville.

Consultation on the National Security Policy is expected to be completed by the end of this year and the write up of the policy will start at the beginning of 2018.

The National Security Policy will involve all the law enforcement agencies such as RSIPF, Customs, Quarantine, Immigration and other relevant stakeholders.

Mr Garu further revealed that the country has recently become a member of the INTERPOL (International Criminal Police Organization), which shows how the international community have confidence in the RSIPF.
