Edwin Horamaitoro is one of the sixteen babies born on New Year's Day at the National Referral Hospital.

SIXTEEN babies were born on New Year’s Day at the National Referral Hospital (NRH) in Honiara.

That’s four more from the12 that were recorded on New Year’s Day last year.

NRH’s Clinical Nurse Consultant and Midwife Doris Dudley told the Solomon Star yesterday eight of the babies were female, while another eight were male.

“All deliveries went smoothly and the mothers were happy to have their babies safe and sound in their arms,” Mrs Dudley added.

She said three of the mothers were 19-year-olds, while the rest were 20 and above.

Most of the mothers and their babies were discharged the day after birth while a few are still at the hospital for observation purposes.

One of the mothers still at the hospital is Pamela Marisi, who gave birth to baby boy Edvin Horamaitoro.

“It’s a special feeling to give birth on New Year’s Day,” Mrs Marisi told the Solomon Star.

“And having a baby in your arms is the great gift any mother could get on New Year’s Day,” she added.

On Christmas day, the hospital recorded 19 births.
