Retired Archbishop and Principal of Selwyn College Emeritus David Vunagi.

Selwyn Collage principal Reverend Bishop David Vunagi was impressed with the new solar hybrid power project designed for his school.

The Solar hybrid power project was still under design stages by the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change, Disaster Management and Meteorology.

It was the first of its kind in the country and will also roll out to several other secondary schools in the country, yet to be identified.

The European Union $8million solar power project was designed locally to suit the Solomon Islands’ environment.

It was part of the climate change adaptation and sustainability energy project which was administered by the German Deutche Gesellschaft fὓr Internationale Zusamennarbeit (GIZ).

In a short briefing between the School principal and officials from the Ministry of Environment, Reverend Vunagi said that he was happy that his school was the first recipient of the project.

“I render my full support to the project and we are looking forward for its completion in the near future.”

Project Manager Fox Henry Qwauina said that the project was the first of its kind for schools in the country, and was expected to be completed towards the end of next year.

“For the start, we are trying to encourage students and staff to get use to this new system of energy management as this solar project is the first to be built among the selected schools.”

The Selwyn hybrid solar power project is a pilot project of the GIZ-EU adapting to climate change and sustainable energy project.

The project was currently under design stages. Installation of the new solar hybrid equipment will be done towards the end of this year to be followed by the monitoring and evaluation phases.
