Communities benefit from RWASH training

THREE villages in Vella La Vella, Western Province have benefited from a new remedial training under the Rural Water Supply And Sanitation Hygiene (RWASH) program.

They are Varese, Sutapati and Soluve villages in West Vella La Vella. About  40 men and women successful underwent the training from the 15th to 19th of this month.

Merilyn Vana from Western Provincial Environmental Health officer told the paper such training was first of its kind under the RWASH Program and was piloted in the Western province on how to properly look after their water supply projects for long time.

Mrs Vana said officers from the Environmental Health department in Gizo and RWASH office in Honiara work together with the help of a community engagement advisor Ross Kidd has implemented the preliminary initiative in the communities.

 The focus of the training was for villagers to have technical knowledge and skills to maintain their water supply system.

Mrs Vana said during the first day of the training the team trained participants how to set up a water supply committee, especially helping them understand criteria for selecting a committee as well as on how to raise funds.

On day two facilitators trained the men to look after the pipeline to the dam while women were trained to fix the taps.

Most of the participants have expressed their delight in learning about the skills and knowledge to maintain their water supply equipment.
