New Zealand (NZ) is preparing to assist Solomon Islands during the National General Election (NGE) on April 3.

New Zealand High Commissioner to Solomon Islands His Excellency Don Higgins told Caretaker Prime Minister Rick Hou at a courtesy call in Honiara yesterday, the assistance will include providing helicopter services during the election and sending over election observers.

High Commissioner Higgins’ courtesy call on Mr Hou was a normal visit to Party Leaders as the country prepares to go to the polls next month.

Mr Hou thanked the New Zealand Government for its assistance during this important time for Solomon Islands.

He said helicopter services will be crucial in assisting the electoral process in terms of logistics and other transportation needs.

High Commissioner Higgins also informed Prime Minister Hou of New Zealand’s recent intervention to assist Australia in operations to contain the ongoing oil spill in Rennell.

New Zealand is sending experts to assist their Australian counterparts in the operation.

Prime Minister Hou has requested Australian assistance when a bulk career ran aground at Lavagu Bay on February 5 when loading bauxite for Indonesian mining company, Bintan Mining Solomon Islands (BMSI).

Prime Minister Hou welcomed the NZ assistance in the Oil Spill operation.
