THE Labour ward at the National Referral Hospital (NRH) was boosted this week with the donation of five new maternity beds to be used by pregnant mothers when delivering their babies.

The donation was made possible through the owner of Deli In The Plaza supermarket located at Panatina Plaza Irene Stephenson.

The donation was made on Wednesday on behalf of the couple by the manager of Deli in the Plaza supermarket Henry Odiamar to the medical superintendent of NRH Dr. John Hue.

The beds were donated to NRH on behalf of all Deli In The Plaza supermarket’s valued customer.

“Without their support to our supermarket we won’t be able to do this,” said Ms. Stephenson in a statement.

Ms. Stephenson said they are expecting another 10 delivery beds for Malaita Province, Western Province and Isabel Province.

“We are happy to be able to give a little contribution back to the community, so that all mothers can deliver their precious new borns comfortably on the maternity bed,” she added.

“We hope other businesses would follow suit by giving back a little to the community and the people of the Solomon Islands for education, health, churches or sports and so on,” she stated.

Meanwhile, Medical Superintendent of NRH Dr. John Hue thanked Ms. Stephenson for the new maternity beds, citing that mothers now have lovely beds to give birth to their new born child.

Dr. Hue said the beds are special because they can be folded and stretched to control mothers to give birth more comfortably.

He revealed that about 300 to 500 mothers gave birth at NRH every month, so the donation is timely and necessary for the operation of the Labour ward.
