Central market to close, April 24, 25

19 April 2019

The Honiara Central Market will be closed on April 24 and April 25, during the election of a new Prime Minister.

Police Chief Matthew Varley made the reminder on Thursday at his weekly conference at the Rove Police headquarters.

He said this is a measure taken to reduce the large movement of people into the commercial centre of the city.

Mr Varley apologised for the inconvenience this will cause everyone in the public.

“And we understand that it will make things hard in terms of doing your shopping and getting supplies for your family.

“We just ask you to plan ahead and look for opportunities to gather your food and your goods before Monday or Tuesday, or look for markets further out in the city.

“The intention here is not to cause disruption, the intention is to try and reduce the concentration of crowd in the city as we head towards polling day and in particular on Wednesday, the 24th, he said.

Mr Varley also added that there will be a large security presence around parliament house and in the city.

He further added that they have public order police team on standby to deal with any situation that could develop.

He however said they are confident and asked communities to listen to their message and to take that into consideration.
