Australian citizens living in Solomon Islands have already begun casting their vote for the upcoming Australian federal election.

On Monday, the Australian High Commission Chancery opened its official Voting Centre for eligible voters to vote during the week ahead of polling day.

Voting at the High Commission will be available from Monday 13 to Friday 17 May, 8:30am to 4:30pm.

The High Commission will be closed on actual polling day, Saturday 18 May.

“We have already had a number of Australians here at the Centre early and ready to vote,” said Community Liaison Officer, Karen Scholte, who has taken on official duties as a polling official at the High Commission.

“It is great that the Australian Electoral Commission has a ‘declaration vote’ system in place, meaning people from electorates across Australia should be able to access a ballot paper and vote in person at the High Commission,” she said.

The High Commission’s Senior Administration Officer, Mr Peter Jensen, said he encouraged people to come in early to vote.

“Don’t leave it too late,” he said.

“Just a reminder to everyone that we will not be open on Saturday, so I encourage voters to make time to come in to the High Commission this week.”
