The Reverend David Vunagi is poised to be the country’s next Governor General.

At the close of nominations 4pm on Wednesday, the former Anglican Church of Melanesia’s (ACOM) Archbishop was the only nominee.

Vunagi is expected to take up his new role from incumbent Sir Frank Kabui on 7 July this year.

Office of the National Parliament confirmed yesterday that at the close of nomination for the position of Governor General, only one candidate was nominated.

Vunagi was nominated by government minister and MP for North New Georgia John Dean Kuku.

Vunagi is a teacher by profession.

He has been the principal of ACOM’s premier school Selwyn College for many years before taking up advance studies in Theology in Canada.

In 1999, he was elected to become the Bishop of the Diocese of Temotu, a position he held until 2009 when he became the Archbishop of the church.

He retired in 2016 and returned to his village in Isabel to live a quiet life, only to be recalled to head Selwyn College again this year.

He is currently the principal of the college, located in northwest Guadalcanal.

Members of Parliament are scheduled to elect a new Governor General when parliament resumes this morning.
