OPMC rejects Sun’s report

02 October 2019

THE Office of the Prime Minister and Cabinet (OPMC) also rejected false claims made in the Island Sun newspaper, Tuesday.

A statement from OPMC stated the allegations were unfounded and a blatant misrepresentation of the facts.

The front-page article claimed Mr Sogavare tried to bypass protocol and was alleged to have forced the Governor General (GG) to receive unknown Chinese official as China’s ambassador to Solomon Islands.

OPMC confirmed that the PRC Ambassador to Papua New Guinea is currently in Honiara for purposes of meeting with SIG Officials in preparation for the inaugural state visit of the Prime Minister to China and not to present his credentials to the Governor General which will only be done once an Ambassador to the Solomon Islands has been appointed by the PRC Government.

The OPMC also clarified to the public that the Prime Minister was not in any way involved with arrangements pertaining to protocols such as presentation of diplomatic credentials to the Governor General which is the responsibility of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and External Trade (MFAET).

Having being preoccupied with internal government matters, the only communication held between the OPMC and the Government House on Monday was on arrangements in relation to the swearing-in of Ministers yesterday.

The OPMC fully understands that Ambassadors have to present their credentials to the Governor General before any meeting with the Prime Minister.
