THE Government of Papua New Guinea has been using seaweed farming as a source of income for the past six years.

And according to Bougainville Seaweed Limited senior co-ordinator Raymond Moworu, this success story could be an example for other Pacific Island countries.

Speaking at the regional Increasing Agricultural Commodity Trade (IACT) training and consultation workshop in Suva Saturday, Mr Moworu said they were also exporting seaweed to overseas markets such as China, Indonesia and Philippines.

"We are working hand in hand with some local companies to extend our services.

"We are also working with some local companies who are interested in doing business with us but that depends on the resources that Fiji has," Mr Moworu said.

He said PNG earned about 800million kina per annum ($F560.63m) from seaweed farming.

Mr Moworu said atoll islands in PNG mostly practised seaweed farming.

"This is a good project for households to take part in since it's the fastest way to earn an income," the senior co-ordinator said.
