Western province U16 team has won the Youth Solomon Cup tournament for the U16 category.

They sealed victory after they won their final round robin match over Renbel 3-1 at the SIFF Academy field on Tuesday.

Western drew two matches and won three matches to give them 11 points.

Yesterday’s match was tough against the underdogs, Renbel who had proven to be yet another strong contender.

Western province took the early lead but was caught up with the equalizer by Renbel just before half time.

Both teams returned in the second half more determined as they searched for the leading goal.

Western regained control in the early minutes of the first half with their second goal followed by their third which they defended until the final whistle sounded.

Head coach, Alick Collins was impressed with his team’s performance all throughout the tournament.

He admitted their aim was to win the tournament having had ample time in preparation for the tournament.

“We have been preparing for the past three months and finally our efforts have paid off.

“Our aim was to win the tournament and we did it.

“I’m impressed with how the team has performed from the start up until today (yesterday).

“I think the advantage we have over the other teams was that we were well prepared, well structured and maintained our consistency throughout the tournament,” he said.

An addition to the medals and trophy they won was the golden boot award, awarded to Lency Mamopio and the Golden Glove award presented to Western province goal keeper.

Guadalcanal finished second with silver medals, Malaita third with bronze and Honiara on fourth place.
