A SPORTS Journalist Association will be setup in the country by the Oceania National Olympic Committee (ONOC) as part of their task to strengthen the industry in the country as well as to link sports journalists in the region and internationally.

As part of their visit in Honiara ONOC Media Specialist Matai Akauola has met with media organizations in the country and briefed them about the proposed association.

“There’s been a lot of talk previously, therefore I think probably the time is right for us have a sports journalists association formed here in Solomons,’’ he said.

“We’ve already set up in Papua New Guinea, Tonga, Vanuatu, Fiji and now Solomon Islands.”

He said the association will affiliate to Media Association of Solomon Islands (MASI) as well as International sports press.

“One of ONOC mandate in the region is to try and assist media to understand whats happening out there in terms of sports not only within its country but throughout the region and internationally.”

He also stressed once the association is established it will also provide training opportunity for local sports journalists in the country through the international sports press.

“Likewise they will get assistance from ONOC in terms of coverage of sports in the region and beyond.”

Meanwhile after his first visit in the country this week Matai confirmed arrangement to setup the association will be finalized soon in which he will come back to Honiara to set up the association.
