The Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF) has congratulated the football fans in Honiara and those who have travelled in from the provinces for their good behaviour during the first day of the OFC Champions League 2018 Group D playoffs last Saturday 24 February and calls for the same behaviour for the rest of the tournament this week.

RSIPF has committed more than 200 officers to provide security at Lawson Tama along with officers from a local security company hired by the Solomon Islands Football Federation (SIFF) for the event.

Three visiting teams from New Caledonia, Samoa and New Zealand are taking part in the tournament with the local team Marist FC.

“I wish to thank members of the public but more specifically the more than 20,000 football fans who turned up at Lawson Tama last Saturday for their good behaviour during the matches.

“It showed to police the level of maturity of our people especially in behaving themselves during such large gatherings,” said Provincial Police Commander, Honiara City, Chief Superintendent, Alfred Uiga.

“I am calling on all members of the public in Honiara including the football fans to continue this good behaviour for the rest of the matches. Police will be out in numbers in around Lawson Tama watching the crowd and controlling the traffic and will not hesitate to take action should anyone try to spoil the fun for others,” said PPC Uiga.

He added: “Let us show the region and of cause the footballing world that people in Solomon Islands are law abiding citizens with a great spirit of sportsmanship.”
