Port Moresby (The National) -  THE PORT Moresby Soccer Association will suspend its season for the second consecutive year due to the upgrading of the facilities in preparation for this years’ FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup in November.

Association president John Wesley Gonjuan told The National that they were in an unfortunate predicament which would not allow them to run any games for this year.

“It is unfortunate that we have to suspend our competition for the third consecutive year” Gonjuan said.

He said negotiations were currently underway with PNG Sports Foundation and the National Sports Trust Limited for the use of Rita Flynn Indoor Courts to host the futsal competition as a way to keep local soccer active to some degree.

“Hopefully some good comes out from these dialogues for the competition,” Gonjuan said.

He said the 2014 and 2015 seasons were disrupted because of the mass acquisition of sporting fields to build facilities for last year’s Pacific Games, and now it would be heading into the third year of inactivity.

He said that a planned meeting with club delegates was postponed indefinitely until his executives were convinced they would get a quorum.

Gonjuan appealed to club executives and players to allow common sense to prevail as it would be impossible to stage a proper competition considering the current circumstances.

He asked all the club executives and officials to keep in touch with the Port Moresby Soccer Association executive for more updates on the plight of the competition.
