FASANOC to discuss goals, strategies at AGM

10 March 2014

The direction and priorities of the Fiji Association of Sports and National Olympic Committee (FASANOC) will be discussed at its annual meeting later this month in Suva.

FASANOC president Reg Sanday said the meeting would allow representatives of 41 affiliates from different sports in Fiji to reassess the objectives of the national sports umbrella body and strategies to achieve them.
"FASANOC's strategic plan straddles two Olympic Games, the London 2012 Olympics and the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil," Sanday said.
"The goal should be for Fiji athletes to improve on their performance at the London Olympics in 2012, which was Fiji's best performance ever.

"Fiji's Leslie Copeland came within a fraction of qualifying for the final top 10, and impressive performances were recorded by Maria Liku in women's weightlifting, Glen Gable in shooting and Robert Elder in archery."
Sevens rugby will be played for the first time at the Olympics in Rio, and Sanday said FASANOC was hopeful of Fiji winning its first Olympic medal in rugby 7s in Rio.
Meanwhile, three of the six vice-president positions will be vacant at the AGM.
"Two of these three positions will need to be filled by Olympic sports to comply with a constitutional amendment made last year.
"Outgoing vice presidents are Radhika Prasad of Lawn Bowls Fiji, Makarita Lenoa, the president of Karate Fiji, and Harvey Probert, the president of the Fiji International Game Fishing Association."
