A cattle herd of 400 will arrive in the country next month.

This follows the signing of an agreement recently between the government of Solomon Island with a cattle company in Vanuatu.

Permanent Secretary (PS) of the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MALS) John Harunari yesterday revealed the proposed arrival of the herd.

He said the preparation plan to ship the cattle herd over are underway.

The ministry is only waiting for a response from the Ministry of Finance to release the money to pay the supplier.

“Hopefully the cattle herd will be here in October,” he said.

The ministry will deploy some officer from the Quarantine and Livestock department who will accompany the animals by boat from Vanuatu to Honiara.

He also confirmed that Tenavatu in East Guadalcanal will host the herd when they arrive.

“Currently we are engaging more landowners to clear the land in preparation for the arrival of the herds,” the PS said.

Construction of a stock yard, pasture and farm house are underway.

Next week a one day site visit to Tenavatu will be organized to see the progress of the site.

From Tenavatu some of the herds will be shipped our to other provinces for farmers to undertake cattle project.
