THE Air Pacific routine flight bound for Honiara was yesterday forced to turn back to Nadi, Fiji from Port Vila, Vanuatu, after a tropical depression was detected.

The Solomon Airlines Office confirmed that the fully booked flight carrying passengers to Honiara was forced to turn back having landed in Port Vila due to the bad weather.

“It was a full flight with Honiara passengers, it was supposed to transit in Port Vila and then onwards to Honiara, however with a tropical depression detected, the plane was forced to turn back to Nadi today (yesterday) morning.

“We have had information that the plane has reached Nadi however Air Pacific is yet to inform us of the rescheduling of its flight,” an officer from the Solomon Airlines said yesterday.

“Hopefully Air Pacific will confirm the rescheduling of the flight so that passengers left stranded in Nadi will return and those intending to fly over to Port Vila and onwards to Nadi will be able to fly out,” he said.

The Solomon Airlines Office also said that the Honiara-Port Vila-Nadi flights were the only once cancelled due to bad weather.

Yesterday Pacific Blue flight from Brisbane to Honiara arrive on schedule and return.

“Other international flights resumed normal schedules-the only flights disturbed by the bad weather was the Honiara-Port Vila-Nadi flights,” he said.

He said that if the weather improves today, and then once rescheduling is confirmed by Air Pacific, then flights will resume as normal today.

Meanwhile the Solomon Islands Meteorological Service yesterday sent out two tropical depression warnings, having sighted a tropical disturbance with a central pressure of 998 hectopascals near Rennell and Bellona, moving south Makira, Temotu, Guadalcanal and Malaita.
