Report recommends use of internet to tap tourist

THE use of internet to tap into high-yield markets and make it a major focus for future marketing is one of the recommendations to boost tourism sector in the country.

The recommendation was contained in the 2009 Diagnostic Trade Integrated Study (DTIS) report launched yesterday.

 It highlighted that the strength of Solomon Islands lies in the mix of experiences that it can offer visitors of all types. 

"Therefore, tasks might include the conduct of website audit of current online resources for the industry, with a focus on basic contents and usability but also on network and linkage formation,” the report said.

"There should be strengthen understanding between the telecommunication and the tourism sector and explore key bottle necks perhaps through the organisation of a knowledge sharing workshop," the report said.

It also recommended a review and benchmark current online marketing activities against efforts by regional competitors especially Vanuatu.

"There is a need to develop an effective strategy for internet focused marketing of tourism," the report stated.

The involvement of local communities at all stages of the tourism development process is also highlighted. 

"Community is an integral and growing part of alternative tourism experiences throughout the world. Only community involvement can true poverty alleviation potential of tourism be tapped in a sustainable way," the report said.
