AS the election day draws closer most inter-island vessels are busy transporting people, cargoes and ballot boxes out to the provinces.

Since last week, ships have been busy moving people around ahead of next Wednesday’s election.

Reports reaching the Solomon Star said that a number of intending candidates have been chartering boats to the provinces transporting cargoes and voters.

This is expected to continue early next week.

The electoral office has also chartered local ships to transport ballot boxes to the constituencies.

They are expected to transport the boxes back to Honiara after election day.

Because of the need to transport voters to the provinces there have been a number of private boats running extra trips over the past days.

Along the streets of Honiara, public notice have been put up by private shipping operators about their pre-election trips in the coming days and early next week.

Western Province is one of the provinces which was also hard hit by lack of shipping.

Reports reaching the Solomon Star said a number of intending candidates are chartering boats this weekend to transport their voters down to the western province.

Other provinces like Temotu, Renbel, and Makira are also facing a similar situation.

A number of voters based in Honiara who are registered in the provinces said shipping problem will deny them from voting this year.
