The x-ray tutor software, together with a dedicated laptop, was presented to Solomon Islands Civil Aviation by Australian Pacific Aviation Security Liaison Officer, Shannon Wandmaker, at a handover ceremony held at the Civil Aviation Department.
During the handover, Wandmaker demonstrated how the new computer can be used to provide airport screening officers virtual training to improve their ability to identify threats in x-ray images.
This is the second of three such training packages being provided to the Pacific region, with Tonga and Samoa also receiving similar training packages.
The delivery of this training package is just one of a number of capacities building activities the Australian Department of Infrastructure has undertaken in partnership with Solomon Islands.
Since 2007 Australia, New Zealand and the Solomon Islands have been working together to install state of the art passenger and baggage screening equipment at Honiara International Airport.
In addition, Australia and New Zealand continue to work with the Solomon Islands to deliver training to aviation security screeners at the airport.
Previously, Solomon Island aviation security screeners could only gain access to this training software once a year during routine refresher training courses delivered by overseas providers.
With the software now available at Solomon Islands International Airport, screeners can undertake regular training, continually refreshing and improving their skills.
The x-ray tutor has the capacity to significantly improve the quality of screening in Solomon Islands while contributing to the Government’s long-term goals of security capacity building in the region and across the globe.
Honiara Airport Manager Aviation Security Service, Alson Navo, thanked the Australian Department of Infrastructure for its generous assistance and said the training program would be a very useful tool in improving the skills of his officers.
