GEOGRAPHICALLY Information System (GIS) is used all over the world for many purposes, said the permanent secretary of Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock, John Harunari.
Mr Harunari was speaking at the first-ever GIS training workshop that opened in Honiara Monday this week.
Mr Harunari said GIS is used all over the world in industries like agriculture, tourism, marine and environment and for public utilities in infrastructure, health, education and telecommunication.
He said in Solomon Islands GIS is used in agriculture development to give the country good relevant and informative information to help our people, especially our local farmers.
Mr Harunari said GIS is a tool, adding the Government would like to see the tool, decide for locals on what infrastructure to established, what industries are viable to grow in the country and to make sure it gives people jobs in agriculture and other sectors.
The permanent secretary stresses the overall aim of the GIS training was to assist the ministry staff and partners to be better facilitated with the skills and knowledge in GIS.
"And to make sure we have effective development interventions with a strong result focused base committed to our people needs," Mr Harunari said.
The GIS training is part of the capacity building project though the National Agriculture Research Institute (NARI) ACP, EU-S&T Actions (Solomon Islands) which PNG, Solomon islands and Vanuatu are party to.
