Today the Solomon Islands Truth and Reconciliation Commission's Exhumations Team are in Koleasi Village, Central Guadalcanal to carry out its first exhumation.
The exhumation will be carried out on Koleasi Village on a victim of the recent ethnic crisis who was from South Guadalcanal but was buried there.
The exhumation TRC is carrying out is a mandate of the commission under the TRC Act of 2008 which is done to bring a closure and to begin the healing process to families of vicitms.
The Exhumation is part of the TRC's operations to achieve its mandate. This program is one of the major programs which began its planning and finally will implement it as of today.
The program would not be possible if it weren't for the support of organizations such as the Solomon Islands Government (SIG) through the Ministry of National Unity, Reconciliation and Peace (MNURP); UNDP through the International Support Facility (ISF); Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF) with the support of PPF; the Argentinean Forensic Anthropology (EAAF); TRC Commissioners and staff; the community of Koleasi and; the family of the late victim.
The program held in Koleasi village today will be witnessed and attended by members and representatives of Solomon Islands Christian Association (SICA); Minister for MNURP; Member of Parliament for Central Guadalcanal; the DPP and others more.
The exhumation will proceed at the village by the exhumation Team which comprise of the TRC Exhumation Coordinator Francis Kapini, his two assistants Anna Pitaboe and Betty Luvusia; visiting experts of Forensic Anthropologists and Forensic Archeologists; our local pathologists Dr. Rogers of NRH; and the RSIPF with the support of PPF.
The exhumation team is accompanied by the TRC Commissioners and staff and the whole program will be witnessed by the Koeasi Community and representatives of the late victim.
TRC appeals to the public and nation as a whole to support the work of Exhumation such as the one held today and a few others that will follow suit.
TRC is a once of a life time healing process for our nation and such programs is an unique opportunity for us all to participate and support.
TRC will present a final report to the prime minister at the end of its operational year.
