Flood brings chaos to Honiara’s traffic

TRAFFIC flow in east Honiara was in total chaos after floods brought on by the heavy rain over-run the Burns Creek area, Tuesday.

By day break, only bigger vehicles were able to pass through the flooded water as traffic was brought to a standstill.

Honiara residents heading to their offices in the Lungga and Henderson areas were unable to reach their workplaces due to the situation.

“This sort of flooding never happens in this area before,” a Burns Creek resident John Rongota said.

“This is the first time for this to happen,” he added.

Burns Creek Primary School, located adjacent to the main road, was flooded, too.

Nearby homes were evacuated.

Police have to step in to control the situation as vehicles drove their way through the floods.

The Honiara Weather station recorded 89mm of rain from 11pm Monday to 2am yesterday.

Henderson weather station recorded 65mm of rain within that same period of time.

“This was quite a lot of rain over a period of three hours,” a situation reporter the National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) issued yesterday, said.

Traffic flow was restored late in the afternoon after the floods subsided.
