Deputy Prime Minister Manasseh Maelanga

DPM says today’s motion does not scare gov’t

WITH the motion of confidence against Prime Minister Gordon Darcy Lilo set to be debated in Parliament today, the Government remained intact.

Re-appointed deputy Prime Minister Manasseh Maelanga told the Solomon Star the motion was not a threat to them.

Although The Solomon Star understands there were minor disagreements during the allocation of ministerial portfolios, Mr Maelanga said Government members have shown maturity throughout as they maintained solidarity ahead of today’s Parliament sitting.

Mr Maelanga said it was common sense that the Government has 29 members compared to the 20 members on the Opposition group.

“The motion is not a threat to us because we have the numbers,” he said.

Both the Government and Opposition are likely to fire bullets at themselves in Parliament today as the Opposition prepares to verbally attack Prime Minister Lilo on the floor of Parliament.

The Opposition Leader Dr Derek Sikua last week Friday filed a motion of no-confidence against Prime Minister Lilo just 48 hours after he was elected.

This followed the negative public reaction which resulted in a political uprising in Honiara.

A spokesperson from Parliament House confirmed the motion was on the notice paper but was still unclear whether it would be an agenda for today’s sitting.

But the Solomon Star understands today (Friday) marks the seven clear days since the motion was filed so it was likely the motion would go ahead today.

Meanwhile, police will be on high alert during today’s sitting in case of any disturbances.

Acting police commissioner Walter Kola warned that his men are fully prepared to counter whatever situation that might brew today.
