This was according to Casper Fa'asala, who is currently attending a Leadership training program on Tobacco Control in Manila, Philippines.
Mr Fa'asala who is currently one of the Service Providers to the Solomon
Islands Correctional Centre on Alcohol Recovery, said if he can now live a
sobriety life from being an Alcohol, others can also follow given they are provided
with the right information and necessary tools for quitting tobacco smoking.
“Tobacco smoking and alcohol consumption are two friendly killers, which not
many people in the Solomon Islands know of and have continued to use.”
Mr Fa'asala said that health is everybody's concern and responsibility, but it
is important that the Ministry of Health take the lead.
“This would mean that all Doctors and Medical Practitioners must quit smoking.
“Another
leading role would mean banning all areas within the hospitals including the
front of outpatient areas of all hospitals in the country as well as for all
clinics around the country.”
Mr. Fa'asala and Geoffrey are two Solomon Islanders nominated by the Ministry
of Health to attend the Training program amongst other countries including the
Philippines, Lao, Cambodia, Vietnam, Thailand, Papua New Guinea, China, Hong
Kong and Guam.
The Training Program is funded by the World Health Organization through its
Regional Office for the Western Region and is conducted by the Johns Hopkins
Bloomberg School of Public Health through the Institute for Global Tobacco
Control.
The training ended yesterday.
