Police arrest arson suspects in Malaita

Police have arrested 20 men in relation to the arson attack on residential quarters at Arai logging camp in South Malaita earlier this week.


The investigation led to the identification of suspected individuals who were tracked down police to villages surrounding and near the Arai Logging Camp and were subsequently arrested.

The suspects were conveyed to Auki Police Station where they were lodged at the Auki Police Watch-house before they were transferred by boat to Honiara.

The first 13 suspects arrived at approximately 11.00am this morning and are currently being dealt with by detectives from the RSIPF National Criminal Investigation Department at the Police Headquarters.

The other seven suspects are still at Auki and are expected to be escorted over to Honiara tomorrow 21 January 2012.

Acting Police Commissioner Walter Kola commended the officers involved in the operation for their quick response which resulted in the arrest of the suspects.                                                                                              

“I would like to thank officers from Auki Station, Maka Police Post and the support team from Honiara for their outstanding work which resulted in a significant arrest suspected individuals allegedly involved in the arson attack,” Acting Commissioner Walter Kola said.

“I would also like to convey my appreciation to the communities near and around Arai logging area that have been very supportive of the Police investigation,” Mr Kola said expressing his gratitude.

The suspects have been charged with Arson, Malicious damage, Intimidation and threatening violence. They are expected to appear in the Honiara Magistrate’s court on a later date.

Police are urging members of the public who may have any information in relation to the arson attack at Arai Logging camp and contact Auki Police on phone 40132 or through the Police Communication Centre on 23666.

The investigation is continuing.
