A $78,000 unpaid power bill is taking its toll on the justice system in Auki, Malaita Province.

A court officer at the Auki court house said power cut to the province’s highest court house is affecting court hearings and the day-to-day duties.

He said power supply was cut off by the Solomon Islands Electricity Authority (SIEA) since December the 19th last year.

“It has never been restored to this day,” the officer said.

He said there is an unpaid power bill which totals to $78,000.

“Since the court went into recess during the festive season, officers returned to find the problem still persist.

“Not only are court hearings affected, but service to the public in terms of legal advise and assistance are denied.”

The officer said prompt response must be taken to rectify the problem.

The Auki court house is a newly built complex – the second largest court house to the one in Honiara.

The court building was officially opened last year.
