Member of Parliament for North Vella La Vella, Hon. Milner Tozaka has challenged the Government to ensure the 2012 Budget lives up to its label as a credible and balanced budget.

The Finance and Treasury Minister had lauded the $3.1-Billion budget-the first ever national budget to hit the billion dollar mark as responsible and fair as it ensures that all Solomon Islanders benefit from the strong national economic performance of the past few years.

Contributing to the parliamentary debate on the budget yesterday morning, the Opposition MP said unless this budget addresses the needs of Solomon Islanders, its credibility will be meaningless.

“I tend to agree with the MP for East Choiseul that this budget will make no difference from last year’s budget performance. Because this budget is only going to maintain the status quo, I think it will be wise for us to start caring for our people. I am not talking about establishing care centres or handing out free money to our people but rather am challenging the budget to deliver as it promises.”

Hon. Tozaka said people in constituencies are still waiting for the Government to deliver water supplies, clinics, roads, markets and transport services and project funding under the previous budget.

“My people of North Vella La Vella are still waiting to get their share of the $2-Million coconut rehabilitation fund and the $4-Million cocoa support scheme from the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock which were channeled through the provincial government.

The MP for North Vella La Vella also revealed that patients in the National Referral Hospital requiring referral overseas are still awaiting funds and some died in the waiting process.

Hon. Tozaka also revealed that teachers and nurses in the provinces have been waiting for the last three months for their outstanding payments from various authorities in the government.

He also cited unemployment and high cost of living as some of the problems that remained unaddressed.

“Our people want and expect better standards of living, health, housing, education and leisure but if the 2012 budget is not going to meet these expectations then its credibility is in question,” Hon. Tozaka said.
