CLASSES in most Honiara schools were cancelled after 12 mid day yesterday due to the bad weather conditions.
Day schools such as Burns Creek Adventists High School, Kukum SDA Primary, Vura, Naha, Saint Nicholas, Coronation, and others all sent their students home after lunch time.
Students told Solomon Star that with the wet weather conditions and the tropical depression warnings, teachers advised them to go home as a precautionary measure in avoiding sicknesses and accidents that may occur.
Speaking to Solomon Star a teacher from Vura Community High School said that they advised students to go home and keep warm as such cold and wet weather can bring about sicknesses.
“We are just in the first week of normal classes however the weather hasn’t been in our favor, especially for the kids who are so anxious to start classes.
“Our only advice to them is to stay home and prevent the wet weather as sicknesses such as pneumonia, malaria and also flu.
“We also advised them not to roam around beside the roads as they may be vulnerable to traffic accidents which may occur in such weather conditions,” he said.
Similar sentiments were uttered by teachers from other schools which Solomon Star visited yesterday.
Some students following their teacher’s instructions and headed straight home said that this was their chance to rest and keep warm from the wet weather.
However to others, it was their chance to roam around the town and also to play fun games with their friends in the rain.
Meanwhile no official cancellation of classes has been advised by authorities from the Ministry of Education and Human Resource Development.
