Guadalcanal Provincial Disaster Coordinator Herrick Savusi said food shortage is likely to occur in two to three weeks time due to prolong rain fall causing water log.
This has affected family gardens, the main source of food for families in rural areas.
Mr Savusi said from the assessment they'd done in certain villages in West and North Guadalcanal, water log is a major problem currently facing residents.
He said from their assessment this year's flood damage is quite small compared to the past years.
However this is not the conclusion as other parts of the island are yet to be assessed and with the continuation of the bad weather major damages can occur at any time.
"The assessment commenced last Saturday and only a few areas had been covered," he said
In West Guadalcanal the covered areas are from Poha to Selwyn College and North East Guadalcanal, from Lungga to Mbokokimbo.
He said they had done rapid assessments whereby they looked at the scale of damage.
Mainly assessing, food gardens destroyed, root crops and cash crops, infrastructure damaged, sanitation and health if there is likely an outbreak of any disease.
The disaster coordinator said assessments would be done in all parts of Guadalcanal Province.
