FORMER Member of Parliament for East Honiara Simeon Bouro has been tipped for the High Commissioner’s post in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea.

This was after the former deputy prime minister and MP for Central Kwara’ae Fred Fono who was assigned to take up the post passed away in December last year.

Permanent secretary to Foreign Affairs Robert Sisilo told the Solomon Star yesterday that Mr Bouro was one of the two candidates that were eyed for the job.

However, Mr Sisilo said he needed to confirm with the Prime Minister before making any formal appointment.

“I will have to confirm with the Prime Minister because the two candidates were appointed by the Government of former Prime Minister Danny Philip,” he said.

Mr Bouro who entered politics in 2001 had held various ministerial portfolios until he was defeated by local businessman Charles Dausabea in 2006.

During parliamentary years, Mr Bouro was the Minister for Police, National Security, Justice and Legal Affairs from 16 February to April 2006, Minister for Mines and Energy from January to 15 February 2006 and Minister for Communication, Aviation & Meteorology from 4 February to 20 December 2005.

The PNG High Commissioner’s post was vacated by former High Commissioner Bernard Bata’anisia since May last year.

Mr Bata’anisia was suspended following the outcome of a special audit report on the financial operation of the commission in Port Moresby, which Mr Bata’anisia was suspected of misconduct in office.

Since then, William Soaki has been appointed as the acting high commissioner.
