IGNORANCE over the ban imposed by the Honiara City Council against selling of salt fish continued at various locations in Honiara over the Christmas period.

People were seen selling at the Mataniko Bridge, Rove market, Kukum and Ranadi (JBM area).

“As rural dwellers looking for a means to earn a living, we have decided to continue to sell because it is what we live on,” one vendor who wants her name withheld said.

She said they serve a lot of people who cannot afford the high price of fresh fish at the markets.

“People came to us asking for salt fish and with the market areas closed for Christmas we decided to sell within the areas we live.”

She said that some of the fish they sold were either given or sold to them by some customs and security officers working on foreign fishing vessels berthing outside.

HCC Health Authorities and the department of Customs and Excise had imposed the ban against the selling of salt fish and other fish or products brought in by foreign vessels.

Two weeks ago City Mayor Andrew Mua had pointed out to a group of women who protested against the ban, that only those who provide a permit or clearance by Customs would be allowed to sell salt fish.

Mr Mua said legal action would be taken against those who disobey.

The fish vendors however said that salt fish is of very high demand in town and it helped Honiara residents who cannot afford much during the holiday.
