CENTRAL Guadalcanal Member of Parliament Peter Shanel says the government is ignorant not to consider the proposed reconciliation in the Weathercoast of Guadalcanal.

Mr Shanel made the statement when the Minister for Police Chris Laore said he was not aware of the proposed reconciliation when questioned in parliament yesterday.

The reconciliation was proposed for the former police joint operation and people of the Weathercoast for the operation carried out in the area during the past ethnic conflict.

“It is irresponsible for Police Minister to not be aware of the issue when the current government prioritises reconciliation,” Mr Shanel said.

He said people of Guadalcanal particularly in the Weathercoast and other parts are waiting for the reconciliation because were badly affected by the operation.

“The Government must see this issue as sensitive and it needs greater attention for government to address the sooner the better.”

Aoke Langa langa MP Matthew Wale agreed that the government must never by-pass the issue because it can cause instability to the peace in the county.

Opposition Leader Dr Derek Sikua said it was a long time issue that the government failed to address.

Dr Sikua says it is not fair for the people of Guadalcanal to continue to allow their land for economic development while their demands to the government fall on deaf ears.
