The hospital was without a doctor after the death of a young doctor who posted to the province died early this month.
A Lata hospital spokesman told the Solomon Star yesterday they are in dire need of a doctor.
He said Lata Hospital served the whole province and a replacement needs to be done immediately.
“We have already encountered difficulties as many patients coming to the hospital need attention from doctors and not nurses.”
The spokesperson said they have started to send patients to Honiara which is very expensive.
“These patients can be attended here if a doctor is available but unfortunately we have to send them over to Honiara.”
Another resident of Lata also raised the same concern, saying the absence of a doctor had put the lives of people at risk.
“If there’s an outbreak of a major disease, we would certainly be in a hopeless situation.”
He added that due to the remoteness of the province timely respond from outside doctors will be poor compared to other provinces.
Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health and Medical Services Dr Lester Ross said the matter will be addressed soon.
Dr Ross said the Undersecretary of Administration Dr Cedrick Alependava is responsible for posting but he is still on holiday.
“As soon as Dr Alependava resumes duty, the issue will be taken on board to be discussed by the responsible committee,” Dr Ross said.
